Angelina Jolie recently filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, ending a 2-year marriage that was part of a relationship that spanned over 10 years. After the announcement, speculation began about the reasons behind the Brangelina split.
According to a recent article in the Guardian, one of the reasons Angelina is leaving Brad is because of his continued marijuana use. Pitt has spoken openly about using marijuana recreationally in the 1990s, telling the Hollywood Reporter: “I was smoking way too much dope; I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut; and I really got irritated with myself.”
Entertainment site TMZ states, “Angelina became “fed up” with Brad’s consumption of weed and possibly alcohol, and mixed with what she believes is “an anger problem” …felt it became dangerous for the children.”
According to Vulture.com, Pitt’s acting career started with roles that pigeonholed him with a youthful ‘stoner’ image. His big break was in the movie True Romance, featuring Pitt as Michael Rapaport’s “couch-dwelling roommate Floyd, whose life is spent watching cartoons through a haze of smoke. Despite Pitt’s meager screen time, the role enters the stoner canon, and becomes a key component of his star image.”
California law allows for “no-fault” divorces – meaning a spouse does not have to sue his or her partner for any specific grievance, such as adultery or abandonment – but Jolie is reportedly seeking physical custody of the couple’s six children, and marijuana use can be a factor in custody decisions.
According to attorney Daniel Beck, who specializes in California medical marijuana law, “Marijuana, like any other substance, can be abused…The question is, what is the effect on the children? Even if someone has a medicinal [marijuana] card, if they imbibe with the children in the room, that could be looked at as something that is not in the children’s best interest.”
A separate attorney, Diana Richmond, a family law attorney with 40 years of experience in California, said that substance abuse was a very common reason for divorce but that marijuana was rarely the sole cause.
However, until either star makes a statement concerning the divorce, all reports are purely subjective.
