After 30 Years, Woody Harrelson Calls It Quits With Marijuana

In a recent interview with Vulture, actor Woody Harrelson made a surprising announcement: His days of smoking pot are a thing of the past. (No, seriously. After Natural Born killers we were hard pressed to believe him, too, but here it is.)

Harrelson has stated that he’s actually been marijuana-free for the past year, saying, “…[now] I’m now extremely moderate and … I actually stopped smoking pot almost a year ago,” further adding that, “30 solid years of just partying too f——- hard” had made him emotionally unavailable, and that while he has no problem with marijuana in general, keeping away from it has been tough because people around him are still smoking it.

As an example he points out that, “Well, like, last night, someone had—not just good herb but sativa; really good sativa. There’s a joint, and beautifully rolled. I like a beautifully rolled … and I just was like, I mean, I’ve gone this long,” he stated, “It would be weird to just be like, ‘Okay, let me have a hit off that,’ and then suddenly go back to smoking too much.

This is surprising for many reasons, not the least of which is that as recently as 2016, Harrelson was one of the first to apply to open a medical marijuana dispensary in Hawaii – a mere few months after the state’s Department of Health approved the production of medical marijuana. His application was rejected, but he was still open about stating, “I don’t have a problem at all with smoking,” he said. “I think it’s a great drug.”

This new attitude toward his pot usage would seem to be putting a stop to that pot restaurant Harrelson was planning on opening back in 2013 with Willie Nelson.
